Heritage Resources for Kids

Waterways Ireland's Learning Zone contains useful teacher information packs for all primary level education teachers to download and use offline for classroom and outdoor educational activities.

Learning Zone

This website is part of the Waterways Ireland Education Programme which is about bringing the inland waterways into the learning environment.

The programme aims to encourage teachers, school children and parents to develop an appreciation for their local inland waterway, be that a canal, river or lake, as a place of learning, a place for recreation and a place to reflect on the past.

The resources we develop and programmes or workshops we deliver feed into the curriculum and compliment what schools are doing within the classroom.

We hope the resources and actvities inspire you as you connect with your local waterway!

Our heritage

Central to our mission is to be custodians of the built, natural and cultural heritage of our inland waterways. On an ongoing basis, we preserve 350 km of man-made canals that are over 200 years old.  We monitor and repair 348 fixed, swing and lifting bridges, 157 locks and 56 weirs.

Memories of the Waterways

The primary and secondary lesson plans contain exercises that encourage all modes of communication including talking and listening, reading and writing. Also, it directly assists in the required development of the pupil’s ability to ‘listen to and take part in discussions, explanations and presentations, communicate information, ideas, opinions, feelings and using an expanding vocabulary.’
