Class: 5th–6th / P6-P7
Objective: Students will create a visual or written narrative inspired by The Boatman’s Journey.
Materials:
- StoryMap: The Boatman’s Journey
- Art supplies (paper, markers, coloured pencils)
- Optional: digital tools for comic strip creation (e.g., Canva, Pixton)
Lesson Outline:
Introduction (10 mins)
- Introduce the art of storytelling and its role in preserving history.
- Show examples of stories or illustrations from the StoryMap.
Activity: Create a Story (40 mins)
- Option 1: Comic Strip
- Students illustrate a 4–6 panel comic strip showing a boatman’s adventure.
- Option 2: Short Story
- Students write a short story (1–2 pages) about a specific event or day on the Grand Canal.
- Provide prompts to guide creativity (e.g., “A storm hits while navigating a lock,” or “A surprise delivery at Shannon Harbour”).
Wrap-Up (10 mins)
- Display the artwork or read selected stories.
- Reflect on how storytelling helps us understand history.
