Lesson Plan 4: Storytelling and Art - Creative Arts

Class: 5th–6th / P6-P7
Objective: Students will create a visual or written narrative inspired by The Boatman’s Journey.
Materials:

  • StoryMap: The Boatman’s Journey
  • Art supplies (paper, markers, coloured pencils)
  • Optional: digital tools for comic strip creation (e.g., Canva, Pixton)

Lesson Outline:
Introduction (10 mins)

  • Introduce the art of storytelling and its role in preserving history.
  • Show examples of stories or illustrations from the StoryMap.

Activity: Create a Story (40 mins)

  • Option 1: Comic Strip
    • Students illustrate a 4–6 panel comic strip showing a boatman’s adventure.
  • Option 2: Short Story
    • Students write a short story (1–2 pages) about a specific event or day on the Grand Canal.
    • Provide prompts to guide creativity (e.g., “A storm hits while navigating a lock,” or “A surprise delivery at Shannon Harbour”).

Wrap-Up (10 mins)

  • Display the artwork or read selected stories.
  • Reflect on how storytelling helps us understand history.
