Our remit
Our waterways are vital natural spaces for people and wildlife:
Conserving heritage
On an ongoing basis, we preserve 350 km of man-made canals that are over 200 years old. We monitor and repair 348 fixed, swing and lifting bridges, 157 locks and 56 weirs. We also maintain service facilities for boaters throughout the waterways.
We are the largest of six North/South Implementation Bodies established under the British Irish Agreement of April 10, 1998.
We operate under the overall policy direction of the North South Ministerial Council, with accountability to the Council, the Oireachtas and the Northern Ireland Assembly.
