About the projects
- The Royal Canal Greenway Animation project received €487,500 which was 75% of the total cost, the remaining 25% (€162,500) was provided by Waterways Ireland. The funding was for the enhancement of 130km of the Royal Canal Greenway from Maynooth to Longford town and Cloondara. This project will provide interpretation signage, signature points, and waymarking, differentiating it from other greenways. Delivery of this project will further enhance the attractiveness of the region by improving the visitor experience along the Royal Canal Greenway and providing the means by which visitors can explore the built, natural, and cultural heritage of the greenway environs. The Royal Canal Greenway is also a cherished asset for local communities.
- The Shannonbridge Jetty Project received €150,000 in funding through Fáilte Ireland’s Investment Grant-Aid Scheme for Strategic Partners. Waterways Ireland invested a further €160,000 in funding for this project. The development centres on a new floating jetty with guide piles, providing 12 additional berths alongside dedicated access for canoe and kayak users. Enhanced safety and accessibility features include new pathways and access ramps, navigation markers, improved lighting, safety ladders and life rings, creating a safer and more inclusive experience for both the local community and visitors.
- The Shannon Harbour project consists of a significant public infrastructure upgrade with 250 metres of hard-edge mooring being provided for visiting boats. The project is 80% funded by the EU Just Transition Fund (€520,000) alongside Waterways Ireland part funding of 20% (€130,000). Situated at the confluence of the Grand Canal and Shannon Navigation, this facility provides a destination on the Grand Canal and will encourage boats to proceed further along the Grand Canal to Tullamore and other canal destinations. The moorings are manufactured with Ekki timber which provides a 40-year span. Alongside the completion of the Grand Canal Greenway from Shannon Harbour to Edenderry in 2025, the provision of this mooring facility greatly enhances the visitor experience to Shannon Harbour and the Grand Canal.
