Lesson Plan 3: Engineering the Barge - STEM

Grade Level: 5th–6th / P6-P7
Objective: Students will explore the design and functionality of traditional barges.
Materials:

  • StoryMap: The Boatman’s Journey
  • Animation of the barge plan
  • Paper, rulers, and pencils
  • Recycled materials (cardboard, straws, etc.) for barge models


Lesson Outline:


Introduction (10 mins)

  • Briefly explain the purpose and design of traditional barges.
  • Discuss the engineering challenges of canal transport (e.g., weight distribution, lock navigation).


Explore the StoryMap (10 mins)

  • Show the animation of the barge plan.
  • Highlight key features: cargo space, living quarters, and engine


Activity: Design and Build (30 mins)

  • Students sketch their own barge designs inspired by the animation.
  • Using recycled materials, create a simple barge model.
  • Encourage students to think about functionality and aesthetics.


Wrap-Up (10 mins)

  • Students present their models and explain their design choices.
  • Discuss how modern transportation differs from canal barges.
