Monasterevin

Visit the pristine town of Monasterevin in County Kildare, located by the River Barrow and the Barrow Line Canal. Inhabited since the Neolithic period, Monasterevin is the perfect marriage of adventure, nature and history. 

Favoured by walkers, boaters, paddlers and anglers alike, Monasterevin boasts many beautiful walks, including the 12km Monasterevin to Vicarstown route, which takes you along grassy towpaths, quiet gravelled roads and peaceful farmland. Boaters can moor in Monasterevin, while those wishing to explore the water can hire a barge from Blueway Barges or Jennifer’s Travels Barge Hire, or a kayak from Monasterevin Blueway Kayaking Club. Anglers can fish for bream, roach, rudd, perch and pike, and the town has a great selection of restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs – from Mooney’s Pub by the river, to Insomnia Coffee Company, which serves fair-trade coffee, hot chocolate, tea and snacks. Accommodations such as Robin’s Rest are available in nearby Ferns Bridge.
