About the Barrow Way
Experience the tranquil beauty of the Barrow Way, a long-distance walking trail along the Barrow Navigation’s original towpath, meandering through some of the most gorgeous scenery in Ireland. Spanning 117 km and taking approximately 4 days to walk in total, the Barrow Way is most commonly divided into shorter, more manageable sections, with stop-offs or overnight stays in the picturesque towns and villages along the route.
Starting at Lowtown, County Kildare, and finishing in St Mullins, County Carlow, the Barrow Way’s gentle, level terrain weaves past pretty lock keeper’s cottages, flowing waters and gushing weirs, all amidst a landscape of lush, rolling greenery. Wander along serene riverbanks and quiet towpaths. Spot an abundance of wildlife, from moorhens to otters. Immerse yourself in the historical treasures you’ll take in as you explore, from ancient farmlands and arched bridges to castles, abbeys and archeological sites. Uncover the rich histories of the adjacent towns, some of which were inhabited as early as the Neolithic period.
While the Barrow Way is a walking and hiking trail, the Barrow Blueway is nearing completion, and will offer a full biking and paddling experience. However you choose to explore the Barrow, you’ll leave invigorated by a unique experience in glorious nature.
