National Famine Way

Embark on a thrilling 165 km journey that traces the footsteps of Strokestown’s Famine Emigrants, residents of Strokestown who were marched from Roscommon to Dublin in 1847 after being unable to pay their rent. Largely following the Royal Canal, the historic route meanders through country lanes, pretty villages, bustling towns and vibrant cities, and can be explored in sections or as one intrepid journey. The section of the route along the Royal Canal Greenway can also be enjoyed by bike.

Immerse yourself in the poignant history of the emigrants, brought to life through the interactive bronze shoe sculptures you’ll see across the trail. Delve deeper at the two landmark museums, placed close to the start and end of the route – The National Famine Museum at Strokestown Park marks the beginning, while The Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship/ EPIC Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin concludes the walk. This is the perfect adventure for those interested in Irish history, but you don’t need to be a history buff to enjoy the journey – beautiful scenery, varied villages and townships and a multitude of landmarks ensure this route has something for everybody.
