Mountsandel Wood

Enjoy serene walks through the forests along the eastern bank of the River Bann, near the historic Mountsandel Fort. This breathtaking area holds the distinction of being the site of Ireland’s earliest known human settlement, dating back to the Mesolithic era. Explore via a high-elevation route with panoramic views, or take a leisurely stroll along the ground-level riverside path.

Access the elevated route by following the linear path at the top of the slope, or start at the foot of the slope for the lower-level walk. You can combine both paths to form a circular route, or create your own route via the steps at the Fort.

Please note that these walks are located in a working forest and may occasionally be redirected or temporarily closed.
