Take in dense woodland, scenic lake views and a 17th-century castle on this gentle circular route. Starting along the peninsula shore, you’ll walk between alder and willow trees, enjoying a terrain that was submerged under water until the 1880’s, when the Lower Lough Erne was lowered by several metres, revealing new land and creating new habitats.
As you follow the new shoreline, you’ll spot older oak and beech trees higher up the banks, marking the perimetres of the former water level. Enjoy stunning views of Lower Lough Erne, Boa Island and Kesh from the trail’s northward-facing sections before entering the woods. Keep an eye out for native forest dwellers, such as the pine martin. Then, the walk opens up to reveal the imposing Castle Caldwell, an early 17th-century fort which fell into ruin, then was partially restored in the Gothic style in 1792, and now exhibits a mix of both original and newer architechture.
With its combination of history, nature and breathtaking views, this 45-minute walk is the perfect introduction to the area. Just note that, as it’s located in an active forest, the route may occasionally be subject to temporary changes or closures, so make sure you pay attention to any safety instructions.
