Abbeyshrule

The peaceful town of Abbeyshrule is an ideal stopoff on your Royal Canal Greenway adventure. Located right on the banks of the Royal Canal, with the Greenway crossing the bank at Draper Bridge, Abbeyshrule is surrounded by rolling hills and greenery. Many of Abbeyshrule’s abandoned buildings have been restored under a recent initiative, and you’ll see these along the Royal Canal Greenway – keep an eye out for the Yard Hub, an excellent example of this restoration work.

Take in the Whitworth aqueduct as you run, walk or cycle the Greenway – just 1 km west of Abbeyshrule you’ll pass over the aqueduct at height, with spectacular views of the countryside and the River Inny. Heading eastwards past the aqueduct for 400m to Scally’s Bridge, you can cross the bank to access a small recreational area with picnic tables, angling points and free parking. Continuing down to Abbeyshrule, you’ll find The Rustic Inn, where you can enjoy Irish and European cooking and a leisurely pint, or spend the night in its cosy rooms before continuing your Royal Canal Greenway adventure.
