Waterways Ireland advises masters of vessels and waterway users that a long-distance endurance swim of the Shannon commences on Saturday, 22 August to (TBC) Saturday, 29 August 2026.
Swimmer Conor Lanigan (19 yrs old) will undertake an exceptional endurance challenge, swimming approximately 230 km along the River Shannon from Dowra, Co. Cavan, to the Hunt Museum in Limerick, in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.
Navigation Advisory. The swim will take place over approximately six days and will be supported by safety vessels (Cruiser, Kayak & RIB). The swimmer will be clearly identified by the support team and a tow float. Masters of vessels are requested to:
- Proceed with caution when approaching the swimmer and support vessels.
- Reduce speed and keep wake to a minimum.
- Maintain a safe distance from the swimmer and support vessels.
- Comply with reasonable directions given by event safety personnel.
Masters of vessels are reminded that the swimmer may be encountered at various locations along the Shannon during 22-29 August.
