Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters of vessels that the eastern deep-gate at Athlone Lock has experienced a mechanical failure and is currently non-operational, remaining fixed in the closed position.
The western deep-gate remains fully operational, and the lock continues to be available for navigation. However, navigation is restricted to vessels with a maximum beam of 20 ft (6.1 m), as shown below:

Masters of vessels transiting Athlone Lock are requested to:
- Proceed with appropriate caution when approaching and using the lock.
- Follow all instructions issued by Waterways Ireland lock-keepers.
Waterways Ireland engineers are investigating the fault and repairs will be undertaken as soon as practicable to restore full operational capability.
Waterways Ireland regrets any inconvenience caused and will issue a further update once the repair works have been completed and the lock has returned to normal operation.
