Waterways Ireland regrets to inform masters of vessels on the Royal Canal that Level 14 is closed to navigation with immediate effect due to a significant loss of water from the level.
During the night of 24 / 25 July 2026, the breast gate rack at Lock 14 was found to have been left open by person(s) unknown, resulting in the drainage of water from Level 14. Consequently, the level is currently unnavigable to all vessels.
Waterways Ireland is currently working to restore water levels. However, owing to the prolonged period of exceptionally low rainfall, it is not yet possible to determine how long it will take to fully replenish the level and safely reopen the navigation.
The loss of water from Level 14 may have secondary impacts as Waterways Ireland undertakes water management operations to rebalance levels along the Royal Canal.
Masters of vessels berthed in the Confey and Castleknock areas are advised to monitor local water levels closely and adjust mooring lines as required. Water levels may rise or fall during the rebalancing process, and vessels should be moored in a manner that allows for these fluctuations.
Masters of vessels and all canal users are reminded of the importance of leaving all lock gates, sluices, paddles and rack mechanisms in the condition in which they were found. Any unusual water levels, damaged infrastructure or suspected interference with water control structures should be reported to Waterways Ireland without delay.
This is an unfortunate incident which has adversely affected the navigation and inconvenienced waterway users. Waterways Ireland thanks all users for their patience and cooperation while every effort is made to restore normal navigation as quickly as possible.
