Shannon Navigation Restrictions for Construction of New Hartley Bridge

Marine Notice No. 53 of 2026

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise Masters of Vessels and waterway users of navigation restrictions at Hartley Bridge on the Shannon Navigation, May 2026 – September 2027

Jons Civil Engineering, on behalf of Leitrim County Council, will commence construction of a new bridge at Hartley, located mid-way between Carrick-on-Shannon and Leitrim. Instream works are scheduled to commence on Thursday, 21 May 2026. A temporary vessel traffic management arrangement will be in place for the duration of the works, expected to continue until September 2027. Due to Inland Fisheries Ireland requirements, in-water construction can only take place from May to September.

Masters of vessels are requested to comply with all onsite signage and directions from works personnel, as per the diagram below:

During construction:

  • Vessels travelling upstream (from Carrick) must give way and yield to vessels travelling downstream (from Leitrim)
  • Vessel passage will be restricted to the centre arch only.
  • The upstream arch will be permanently closed for the duration of the works.
  • Speed restriction of 5 km/h applies within 200m of the works.
  • Masters are legally responsible for their boat's wash/wake and must be considerate of the works area.
  • Masters must always proceed with caution, in accordance with the Bye-Laws.

The navigation will likely require temporary closures for specific elements of the works. We will issue separate Marine Notices in advance of any such closures, ideally outside the main boating season.

Waterways Ireland thanks waterway users for their cooperation and apologises for any inconvenience caused.
