Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters of vessels that works are planned to install upgraded moorings for visiting craft at Shannon Harbour in 2026.
The project, part-funded by the EU Just Transition Fund, will deliver approximately 300m of fixed timber jetty with access to the existing Greenway. These works will include installation of service bollards providing low-intensity lighting and water supply.
Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-January 2026. All vessels currently moored within the designated works zone must therefore be relocated by 12 January 2026.
After this date, any remaining vessels may be moved in accordance with the powers vested in Waterways Ireland by S.I. No. 247/1988 – Canals Act, 1986 (Bye-Laws), 1988.
Waterways Ireland acknowledges that this project will affect vessels currently moored in the area and apologises for any inconvenience. Alternative berthing is available to the east of the planned works, beyond the turning head.
The purpose of this upgrade is to support increased visitor use of the Grand Canal, it is not intended for long-term mooring at this location.
The provision of additional visiting berths aligns with the objectives of the EU Just Transition Fund, the Shannon Tourism Master Plan, and supports Waterways Ireland’s commitment to enhancing access and enjoyment of Ireland’s waterways.
Further communications will be issued regarding berthing arrangements as construction progresses.
