Waterways Ireland advises all masters of vessels and waterway users that the River Barrow is currently experiencing localised river flooding and dangerously high flow rates due to prolonged heavy rainfall. This notice is in addition to: Marine Notice No. 08 of 2026 - Warning - All Inland Navigations, issued 26/01/2026
1. Avoid all Navigation. Waterway users and boaters are strongly urged to avoid all navigation / swimming / boating / canoeing / kayaking activities on the River Barrow, as the current conditions present risks to life and property.
2. Specific Hazards on the River Barrow:
- High Flow Rates. Increased flow makes lock approaches and departures exceptionally hazardous.
- Reduced Air Draft. Clearance under bridges will be critically diminished; do not attempt passage if clearance is in doubt.
- Submerged Infrastructure. Many fixed jetties, paths, and quay walls are currently underwater or have dangerously low freeboard.
- Debris. High water levels have introduced significant floating debris into the main navigation channel.
- Mooring Security. Fluctuating levels and high-velocity flows are placing extreme strain on cleats and lines. Do not put yourself at risk to secure a vessel in fast-flowing floodwaters. Vessel masters should check vessel moorings and berthing lines only when it is safe to do so.
3. Safety Advisory. Extreme caution is required. Call 112 in the event of an emergency. Monitor real-time updates via the Waterways Ireland Marine Notices page and track local weather alerts through Warnings & Advisories - Met Éireann - The Irish Meteorological Service.
Waterways Ireland appreciates your cooperation as hazardous conditions continue. Remain vigilant, be risk adverse in your decision making.
