Lock Maintenance

Closure of Locks Numbers 1 and 2

With reference to Marine Notice 3/2010, Waterways Ireland wishes to advise all Masters and users of the Shannon Erne Waterway that closure of Lock Number 1 at Corraquill and Lock 2 at Ballyconnell has been extended until 29th March 2010.

End of Winter Mooring Period

Masters and owners are advised that the winter mooring period ends on Wednesday 31 March 2010 thereafter Shannon Navigation Bye-law No. 17(3) applies i.e. vessels should not be berthed in the same harbour for longer than the statutory period of 5 consecutive days or more than a total of 7 days in any one month..

LOCK 15 Tirmactiernan

CLOSURE

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise all Masters and users that the Shannon-Erne Waterway will be closed to navigation at Lock 15 Tirmactiernan from 16th February to 16th March 2010 to facilitate essential maintenance operations to the lock gates.

Lock 2 at Ballyconnell from 18th January 2010 to 16th March 2010

Lock 5 Ardrum from 15th January 2010 to 29th January 2010

PROCEDURES FOR PASSING OF MOORING ROPES TO LOCK-KEEPERS

Masters are advised and reminded to inspect their mooring ropes before departure on a voyage and ensure that there are no knots or foreign objects such as fishing hooks or lead weights embedded in or attached to the mooring ropes. These pose a safety hazard to crew and lockkeepers alike.

On entering a lock chamber, the lock keeper will offer a boat hook to the crewmembers for the transfer of the mooring lines.

The lines must not be thrown to or at the lock keeper in the interest of safety and an efficient mooring operation.

MARINE NOTICE 12/09

LOCK WAITING JETTIES

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise all Masters and users of the navigations under their jurisdiction that waiting jetties adjacent to locks are for vessels entering / exiting the lock chamber only and should be kept clear at all times. Vessels remaining on these jetties may be moved to alternative berthing.
