Equality
Waterways Ireland has been designated as a body to which all aspects of the Section 75 Northern Ireland Act 1998 apply. In addition, as a North / South Body, Waterways Ireland also complies with the Employment Equality Acts, 1998 and 2004, and the Equal Status Acts, 2000 and 2004, the relevant equality legislation in Southern Ireland.
The Waterways Ireland Equality Scheme, which was approved in September 2002, sets out the organisation's strong commitment to promoting equality of opportunity and good relations in carrying out its functions. For a copy of the Equality Scheme please on the link below.
The Waterways Ireland Equality Issues Task Group was established to support and advise on the promotion and development of equality within the organisation. Each year, an annual work programme is developed to help support and deliver equality through all of Waterways Ireland's work and to assist the organisation in meeting the commitments contained within the Equality Scheme. The programme is planned and managed by an Equality Issues Task Group. For a copy of the 2009 Equality Work Programme please click on the link below.
During 2005, the Equality Issues Task Group considered the results of the Waterways Users Equality Survey completed during 2004, which sought to establish if any of the groups which Waterways Ireland is committed to promoting equality of opportunity were represented as users on the waterways. The results collated were then compared to census data, where available. For a copy of a summary of the research report please click below.
