Issued 30.10.09

Waterways Ireland dredges the Grand and Royal Canals in Dublin

Waterways Ireland has confirmed that dredging of the Dublin inner city section of the Grand and Royal Canals will commence in November 2009.The work is key to keeping the Canal navigable for a range of boats. To facilitate works the Grand Canal Circular Line, Lock 1 - Lock 5 will be closed to navigation from 2 November 2009
The work will involve the removal of sediment deposits from the central navigation channel of the canals and the clearance of rubbish. There may be an impact on traffic in these areas during this period. Traffic Management Plans agreed with Dublin City Council, have been designed to keep disruption to a minimum. Works are due to be completed by year end.
Dredging on the Grand Canal will commence at Lock 1 at Grand Canal Dock Road and progress in a westerly direction to Lock 4 at Baggott Street Bridge. The work will be undertaken by BAM Construction Limited and will involve the use of excavating machinery working within the canal.
The Royal Canal contract will commence at Lock 1 at the North Strand Road Bridge and progress in a westerly direction to Lock 6 at Cabra. The work will be undertaken by John Paul Construction and will involve the use of floating equipment.
An engineer will be full time in attendance for the duration of the contract to ensure that issues which arise are dealt with in a prompt and efficient manner. He can be contacted on Tel 087 1778563.
All material removed from the canals will be transported to licensed disposal facilities.
The work is funded by the Government under the National Development Plan 2007 - 2013. For further information on the project please visit the Waterways Ireland web site www.waterwaysireland.org and check out the 'Navigation Information, Planned Works' page.
