Waterways Ireland Heritage Projects 2017
This year saw the allocation of €20,000 to 21 projects throughout all our waterways under the new Heritage Grants Programme. We received a diverse range of applications.
We received a diverse range of applications. We will keep you posted about the 2018 Grants Programme which we hope to launch this November. Below is a full list of projects which received funding:
- Biodiversity Train the Trainer initiative along the Royal Canal near Mullingar
- Wordsteps: a sound walk along the Grand Canal, incorporating elements of oral and local history
- Project to promote the importance of biodiversity around Lough Erne, through a temporary exhibition, a 2-week school programme, a swift and bat walk and a wild flower-planting workshop
- Provision of signage indicating the various attractions and amenities in Goresbridge
- Updating of the Heritage Boat Association's website to showcase Ireland's rich floating heritage
- Local history Study Two Habitats, Shared History, New Beginnings, to promote the shared history between the Grand Canal in Allenwood and the Bog of Allen in Lullymore Co. Kildare
- Provision of Barn Owl, Dipper and Swift boxes along the Grand Canal, the Royal Canal and the Barrow Navigation within Co. Kildare
- Colour ring and study of the gull populations on the Grand Canal in Dublin City and at the Grand Canal Basin
- Waterways for Wildlife: a community focused exploration of green and blue canal corridors
- Conference on various heritage aspects of the river Shannon, including history, folklore, navigation, wildlife and geography
- Printing of leaflets to create awareness of free guided walks along the canals near Celbridge
- Installation of heritage-style sign at aqueduct bridge of the Grand Canal over the River Barrow in Monasterevin
- Provision of interpretative signage along the Grand Canal near Milltown, raising awareness on biodiversity
- Provision and management of a beehive on the banks of the Corbally Branch of the Grand Canal Naas
- Replacement of 14 plaques describing the spiritual journey relating to Inis Cealtra and the development of educational booklets and leaflets promoting same
- The Museum of Mythological Water Beasts: part of an outreach programme for the citizens of Limerick, to raise awareness about ecological issues and to reconnect the rivers natural environment
- A collaborative arts project with communities around Lough Ree, aiming to utilize oral histories, acknowledging the seasonal renewal of habitats and traditional boat building skills
- Installation of a sign at Portrun near Lough Ree about the heritage of the locality
- Provision of two events to promote the heritage of the Grand Canal
- Continued development and installation of QR/NFC smart signs along the Royal Canal
- Provision of free White Island Heritage Tours (Lough Erne) during Heritage Week 2017.
