Ministers plant Clare apple tree in Fermanagh

Gregory Campbell MLA, Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure together with his colleague Éamon Ó Cuív, T.D. Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs planted a Clare Apple Tree the Irish Pitcher Dual-Purpose at the Official Opening of the new Waterways Ireland Headquarters building in Enniskillen.

Planted in front of the building and at the waters edge the tree is one of two apple trees presented to Waterways Ireland by the Scarrif Harbour Festival Committee.

The Festival Committee with Irish Seed Savers Association an organisation which promotes the growth of indigenous apple trees, also organised that a Fermanagh apple tree, the Greasy Pippin be planted by Brian Keenan at the opening of the 2008 Scarriff Harbour Festival.

Mr. John Martin Chief Executive of Waterways Ireland said "The planting of the trees in Enniskillen and Scarriff are symbolic of the connection and co-operative experiences Ireland's inland waterways provide".
