Waterways Ireland vindicated

Waterways Ireland has been vindicated in its actions in the appointment of the Director of Marketing and Communications.

A case had been brought against Waterways Ireland in the Fair Employment Tribunal in Northern Ireland, alleging that Waterways Ireland had breached equality legislation in this appointment.

Waterways Ireland had explained to the Tribunal that the British Irish Agreement Act 1999 required Waterways Ireland to accept into its staff anyone transferred under the provisions of this Act. Under these circumstances Waterways Ireland was required to fill posts by transfer rather than by holding open competition. The appointment of the Director of Marketing and Communications was made in line with these requirements.

The parties then reached an agreement and the case against Waterways Ireland was then withdrawn and the Industrial Tribunal dismissed the action.

The Chief Executive of Waterways Ireland is pleased that allegations that his actions were improper have now been withdrawn.
