Smart cards are used to operate the locks on the Shannon-Erne Waterway and Shannon Navigation. They are also used to gain access to the service blocks and to use facilities such as showers, toilets, laundry, pump-outs and electricity. 

Lock passage on the Shannon costs two smart card units. Lock passage on the Shannon-Erne Waterway costs one smart card unit.
