Burtown House and Gardens

Burtown House, an early Georgian villa, is surrounded by lush flower, vegetable and woodland gardens with beautiful park and farmland walks. It hosts a series of secret gardens set in the grounds of an early (1710) Georgian house built by the quaker Robert Power. It has parking, toilets, a shop, gallery and cafe serving tea's, coffee's, homemade biscuits, cakes and delicious lunches using fresh organic seasonal produce from their own kitchen garden. Ballytore is the closest village with one of Ireland's most historic pubs 'The Harp' or Butterfield's. Athy is the closest town offering many historical interests and a good selection of pubs and shops, most notably Clancy's Pub which hosts the oldest running 'trad' night every Thursday. Burtown House is a historic quaker house close to a variety of important historic attractions. There is the quaker village of Ballytore, Mullaghmast Rath which hosted Daniel O'Connel's last monster meeting of 1843 as well as the massacre of 1577. Moone High Cross is two miles from Burtown, what remains of Belan House and Estate is also down the road. The Athy Heritage Centre with the Shakelton exhibition. We are close to Ballintubbert Gardens, Altamont Gardens, The Curragh Race Cource, Punchestown Racecource, Rathsallagh Golf Course and Country House Hotel amongst other attractions. The gardens come to life in early February with a spectacular show of winter aconites, snowdrops, cyclamen and early spring bulbs, followed by many varieties of daffodils, hellebores and trilliums. Open every day from February 9th to February 24th, 10.00am - 4.00pm. The new exhibition Vanishing Ireland will be on show in the Gallery Cafe which will be open every day serving hearty soups, tea's, coffee's and other goodies. The Gardens then open for the season April 1st - September 31st. Every Thursday - Sunday: 10am - 5.30 pm. The Gallery Cafe is also open every Thursday - Sunday and serves srumptous food using fresh seasonal organic produce. Booking is recommended. Group bookings welcome all year round.
