Boating on the Erne System

The lakes and river sections making up the Erne System are really popular for boating, but the vast amount of space available makes boaters feel they are out exploring on their own.

Thankfully for the nervous amongst us, once you've rounded the island or headland a pub, restaurant, hotel, heritage site, vistor attraction or town will come into view and provide a break from the rolling hills and verdant landscape. But for those that want to stay lost, its possible to do so for weeks at a time! Use See and Do to find an activity provider.

Cruiser Hire

(No License required)

The freedom of making your own travel decisions, flexibly deciding to stay or wander a little further off the beaten track, makes cruising holidays a marvelous experience. Never say 'once in a lifetime' because once you've tried it, you'll want to come back again and again.

Self-drive cruisers range in size from 2 - 10 persons and can be hired from bases in Tully Bay, Aghinver, Enniskillen, Killadeas, Carrybridge and Belturbet. Fitted out to a high standard, with sleeping cabins, bathrooms /ensuite bathrooms, kitchen and dining areas as well as a lounge area, these craft are truly a home away from home.

Most companies require the cruiser to be returned to the base from which it was hired but some offer a one-way trip and will collect and return you to the start point to collect your vehicle.

Training is provided at the outset and lifejackets are provided by all companies. Support is also provided enroute should you run into difficulties. Moorings options include both fixed and floating moorings in towns and on islands. The Erne also has easy to use swing moorings available in bays across the lake system.

Boat Trips

The heritage on the islands whether its White Island or Devenish provide good destinations for the day boat hirer and some of the boat trips will take you there as well.

Large accessible tour boats provide visitors to the area with public and private tours of the navigations from 90 mins -2 hours duration. The scheduled public tours take place in high season Easter – September, while private tours for groups can be arranged most of the year, apart from the maintenance period mainly in winter.

Day Boat Hire

Day boats are available for self-drive hire from multiple locations on the upper and lower lakes and also in Enniskillen. Taking up to 10 people and provided with lifejackets and basic training, people can enjoy the waterway taking in their favourite place at their own pace.
