Visit the market town of Portumna in County Galway, close to where the River Shannon meets Lough Derg. Surrounded by stunning scenery and steeped in history, Portumna’s castles, parks, ancient ruins and diverse nature make it a must-visit. Popular with golfers, boaters and anglers, the town has two public harbours with moorings: Connaught Harbour, which is accessible via the river, and Portumna Harbour, on the northern shore of Lough Derg.
History buffs will enjoy Portumna Castle, a fine example of early 17th century Irish architecture with beautiful surrounding gardens, perfect for a stroll. Continue your walk down to Portumna Forest Park, covering almost 450 hectares and alive with red squirrels, fallow deer and many native tree species. Inside the town, you’ll find a variety of pubs, bars and restaurants, as well as several inns and B&Bs for visitors.
