Waterways Ireland advises masters of vessels on all navigations that the prolonged period of low rainfall and warm temperatures is significantly affecting navigation conditions. Consequently, low water levels and extensive weed growth are being experienced across the waterways.
While Waterways Ireland is taking all reasonable measures to manage water levels and control weed growth, boaters are asked to note the following:
1. No change to: Marine Notice No. 81 of 2026 – Shannon Erne Navigation – Low Water Levels – Lough Scur.
2. Navigational guidance for masters of vessels:
- Remain within marked navigation channels at all times.
- Give navigation markers a wide berth and ensure passage on the correct side.
- Plan passages carefully, taking vessel draft into account.
- Adhere to local speed limits and exercise caution in restricted or shallow channels.
3. Guidance if vessel grounded:
- Disengage the engine immediately to prevent damage.
- Check the safety of all passengers.
- Remain onboard and ensure all persons wear lifejackets.
- Do not enter the water.
- Check the internal watertight integrity of the vessel for any signs of leaks or damage.
- Attempt to manoeuvre off gently, using minimal engine power, do not apply excessive engine force.
- Consider emptying freshwater tanks to reduce vessel weight.
- Post grounding - check your hull, prop and steerage as a matter of priority.
4. If unable to refloat:
- Seek external assistance.
- Call 112 or 999 and request the Coast Guard.
- If you are on a hire vessel, also contact your Hire Boat provider directly.
- Do not enter the water.
5. Passage Planning. Masters of vessels should plan their passages carefully, particularly in areas affected by low water levels and extensive weed growth. Current information on Shannon water levels is available via Water Levels. Masters should also seek guidance from local Waterways Ireland staff and other boaters regarding local navigation conditions.
6. If Stranded. Where masters of vessels are unable to continue their passage, for example if impacted by low water on Lough Scur, and are required to remain for an extended period in a Waterways Ireland harbour, they should contact the Waterways Ireland Inspectorate for assistance at Inspectorate.Athlone@waterwaysireland.org.

However, we are continuing to take all reasonable measures to manage water levels and control weed growth.
Above all, boaters are asked to exercise caution, plan ahead and stay safe.
