Proposed Shannon Greenway to Link Limerick and Lough Derg

Waterways Ireland together with Clare County Council, Limerick City & County Council and others have established a Working Group to explore the establishment of a Shannon Greenway (cycle and walkway route) connecting Limerick City to Tumgraney/Scarriff in Co. Clare and develop a proposal.
The proposal is at early concept stage, however the Working Group has been charged with examining route options, design criteria, environmental considerations, land ownership, costings and sources of funding. The utilisation of public lands is a key consideration as there is a significant amount of land currently in public ownership between Limerick and Tuamgraney/Scarriff, in particular the towpaths of the Park Canal, Erinagh Canal and ESB embankments.
The Working Group has been successful in securing financial assistance from the Department of Transport to progress the proposal through feasibility stage and outline appraisal and route options. It is expected that work on this element of the proposal will begin early in 2021.
