Walkway closed to facilitate works on Shannon path, County Clare.

Waterways Ireland have discovered critical failures in two culverts under the public footpath running south from O’Briens Bridge playground alongside the River Shannon, which require Waterways Ireland to close the access to pedestrians immediately.

Waterways Ireland have completed preliminary investigation works which revealed the need to undertake urgent replacement work on both culverts. The environmental screening required as part of the process has been completed. The screening has revealed that due to the sensitive habitat of the environment, planning permission is required before the works can go ahead.

Planning permission can take up to six months to receive and Waterways Ireland is  unable to undertake any works on site until it is approved. The Health & Safety risks associated with the two structures are such that it is essential the route is closed and remain so, until after the refurbishment works are completed.

Waterways Ireland is aware that this is a popular route for the local community and apologises for any inconvenience caused by this closure.

The three access points to the route that will be closed from 16/09/2019 are

1. The section of footpath from approximately 1.3km south of O’Brien’s Bridge Playground heading south for a distance of approximately 350m towards Clonlara

2. A section of footpath from approximately 235m south of St. Michael's Rowing Club /Limerick Regatta Slipway heading south for a distance of approximately 350m towards Clonlara.

3. A section of footpath from approximately 2.2km north of Errina Bridge heading north for a distance of approximately 350m towards O’Brien’s Bridge.
