Open House Dublin 2017 takes place this Octover 13 - 15! This year we are delighted to be working with the Irish Architechture Foundation to offer House Boat Tours in grand canal dock!
Step inside four houseboats stationed in the Grand Canal Docks to see if life on the water could be for you! Homes on show include The Adriana, a Dutch barge built in Holland in 1898 as a working boat and converted into a liveaboard leisure craft in the 1980’s; The Barge Rambl'n Home Houseboat, a Collingwood widebeam barge built to live on; and The Stil Mor Houseboat, a widebeam narrow boat barge; and The Endeavour, a sensitively restored, beautiful narrow canal barge.
We will also be offering tours of 'The Box in the Docks' our buiding on Grand Canal Dock. Of architechtural merit as it is built on water and accessed by way of a footbridge from the quay wall. Built in 1993, it was designed and built to represent a nautical theme – the round windows, the open aspect of the guardrails and the wooden decking of the walkway reflect this. The floor level windows give the impression that the building is moving through water or that you are even on a boat when the water is viewed through them. The rooftop has one of the great views of Docklands in Dublin.
Looking forward to welcoming everyone aboard! Availoability of tours is on a first-come basis: Just turn up and look out for Open House Dublin volunteers. Given the space and weight restrictions of the houseboats, small groups of 2-3 people will be allowed into each houseboat for 5 minutes at a time.
