Replacing Lock Gates - Liam Gleeson

Interviewed at his family home in Cloghan, Co. Offaly in 2015, Liam recalls his early memories of Shannon Harbour and especially the many barges that frequented it. In this clipping he speaks about the skills of replacing plates on the barges ad explains the process.

​“I thought it was a lovely job because the barge was in the dry dock and they used to cut the rivets out and take off the plates, and they had the plates shaped and all for going back and they had to be riveted. They had a forge just there nearby the dry dock. The rivets were heated in the forge fire. The guys that did that were from Dublin. They were specialised men that came down to do the riveting…”
