Shannon Greenway

Public consultation on the proposed greenway identified as a signature project in the Shannon Tourism Masterplan.

Waterways Ireland, together with Limerick City & County Council and Clare County Council are working to develop a Limerick to Scarriff greenway. The proposed greenway has been identified as a signature project in the Shannon Tourism Masterplan and would provide a gateway to and from the heart of Limerick City to Lough Derg and the Shannon. Subject to the selection of the preferred route, the proposed greenway would link Limerick City to Scarriff Town with connections to nearby villages and towns such as Clonlara, Obriensbridge, Killaloe, Ogonolloe and Tuamgraney.

Further key project objectives are as follows:

  • Create connectivity to existing routes and future greenways including Limerick County Council's proposed greenway from Limerick to Montpellier.
  • Link and improve accessibility to a number of significant tourist attractions and features of interest including those in Limerick City, Killaloe Cathedral, Brian Boru Fort, St Cronan's Church and Visitor Centre Tuamgraney and the Scarriff Workhouse.
  • Stimulate and grow economic activity in the urban fringes of Limerick City and Villages and Towns along and adjacent to the proposed greenway.
  • Increase the adventure and recreational potential of the area through increased sustainable tourist and amenity use of the countryside.
