Waterways Ireland advises masters of vessels navigating the Shannon–Erne Waterway that an extended section of low water exists between Lock 8, through Lough Scur, and onwards to Lock 9.
Additional inspections have confirmed that there are a number of locations along this section where the available navigable depth is approximately 1.0m. The entire section should therefore be regarded as low water, and vessels should proceed at dead slow speed throughout. Masters of vessels are advised as follows:
- Masters of vessels with a draft near or exceeding 1.0m should not attempt to transit this section.
- If suitable berthing cannot be secured prior to reaching the affected area, masters should contact the Waterways Ireland Inspectorate for assistance at Inspectorate.Athlone@waterwaysireland.org
- Masters of vessels are advised to navigate at dead slow speed and remain in the centre of the channel when transiting this area.
- A submerged shelf extending from the north embankment on the canal has been identified. A red buoy has been deployed to mark the outer extent of this feature, and temporary "Dead Slow" signs have been installed at Bridge 11, on the approach to the canal section from Lough Scur and at Locks 8 & 9.
- Waterways Ireland is continuing to pump water at Lock 8 to help maintain current water levels within Lough Scur.
Masters of vessels should exercise caution when navigating the canal section. A location map is provided below:
Navigational guidance for masters of vessels:
- Remain within marked navigation channels at all times.
- Give navigation markers a wide berth and ensure passage on the correct side.
- Plan passages carefully, taking vessel draft into account.
- Adhere to local speed limits and exercise caution in restricted or shallow channels.
- Extended period of hot weather has also increased weed growth!
Guidance if vessel grounded. If your vessel becomes grounded in shallow water, follow the steps below to ensure safety:
1. Disengage the engine immediately to prevent damage. Check safety of all passengers.
2. Remain onboard and ensure all persons wear lifejackets. Do not enter the water!
3. Check the internal watertight integrity of the vessel for any signs of leaks or damage.
4. Attempt to manoeuvre off gently, using minimal engine power, do not apply excessive force. Consider emptying freshwater tanks.
5. If unable to refloat:
- Seek external assistance.
- Call 112 or 999 and request the Coast Guard.
- If you are on a hire vessel, also contact your Hire Boat provider directly.
- Do not enter the water!
6. Post grounding check your hull, prop and steerage as a matter of priority.
