Erne System – Enniskillen Seasonal Closure of Eastern Navigation Channel

Marine Notice No. 65 of 2026

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters of vessels and waterway users that the eastern navigation channel between Castle Island, Enniskillen, and the mainland shoreline adjacent to the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum will be closed to navigation from June to August 2026.

The closure is required to facilitate a programme of organised educational, recreational and water-based activities, including school groups, summer camps, traditional boat events and rowing activities. This seasonal arrangement has operated successfully in previous years and provides a safe, segregated area for participants engaged in these activities.

During the closure period:

  • The eastern channel adjacent to Castle Island will be closed to navigation.
  • Navigation will remain available via the main western channel around Castle Island.
  • The activity area will be clearly identified by appropriate signage and marker buoys.
  • Access to Castle Museum Jetty will remain available via the northern side of Castle Island.

Masters of vessels are to:

  • Use the western navigation channel when transiting the area.
  • Proceed at slow speed and create minimum wash.
  • Comply with all signage and instructions in the vicinity.
  • Maintain a vigilant lookout for rowing boats, traditional craft, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and other water users.

Waterways Ireland thanks all users for their co-operation and support.
