Waterways Ireland TriAthy IV grows and grows

The Waterways Ireland TriAthy takes place for the fourth time in Athy, Co. Kildare over the June Bank Holiday weekend 5-6 June 2010, the perfect location to combine a prestigious sporting event with a fantastic heritage environment.
 
The Waterways Ireland TriAthy has grown to become Ireland’s showpiece triathlon event with up to 3,000 competitors expected to compete in the OLYMPIC, JUNIOR, TRY and SPRINT events over a two day period. This year’s event is also expected to bring over 6,000 spectators to spend the weekend in Athy, vying for position along the banks of the River Barrow.
 
The Waterways Ireland TriAthy starts at 9.30 am on Saturday the 5th June with a swim in the River Barrow, a cycle on closed roads between Athy and Maganey Cross, and a run around the outskirts of Athy town. Each of the four events OLYMPIC, JUNIOR, TRY and SPRINT will cover different distances in each of the three elements of the race. The transition area is nestled in the intimate surroundings of Emily Square beneath the historical White Castle.

Waterways Ireland, the TriAthy title sponsor has provide a combination of marketing and operational support to the event. Martin Dennany, Director of Marketing & Communications Waterways Ireland stated:  “The Waterways Ireland TriAthy is an ideal opportunity to engage both residents and visitors in waterway activity, and ensure they see the very best the Barrow Navigation and Athy has to offer as they travel through the area on foot or by bike. The TriAthy event has developed a great reputation as one of the best races on the Irish Triathlon Calendar. Much of its success has been down to tremendous local community input with many local organisations playing vital roles in supporting on the event.
 
TriAthy has also been a welcome addition to the local economy, with estimates of €1.5m in additional revenues being attracted to the South Kildare town.
