Barrow Towpath Plans

Waterways Ireland submitted a planning application to upgrade the Barrow Way-marked Way to Laois, Carlow and Kildare County Councils in February 2017. A request for further information was received on the 23rd March and Waterways Ireland are in process of preparing the information for that response.

The planned upgrade is to provide a multi-use shared leisure route connecting Lowtown in County Kildare to St. Mullins in County Carlow, a distance of 115km of off-road, flat, accessible, public space.  This proposal will further improve access to the beautiful Barrow Way-marked Way to everyone including walkers, cyclists, wheelchair users and families. The trail will pass through the towns of Rathangan, Monasterevin, Vicarstown, Athy, Carlow, Leighlinbridge, Bagenalstown, Goresbridge, Graiguenamanagh and St. Mullins. Waterways Ireland anticpates that the upgraded path will become a Blueway.

Becoming a Blueway

Waterways Ireland will work closely with local businesses and tourism providers, to develop the Barrow Way-marked Way into a Blueway destination.
