Riverfest 2007

Waterways Ireland Riverfest 2007

The inaugural Waterways Ireland Riverfest in association with the Lower Bann Partnership and Coleraine Borough Council took place at Christie Park on the Lower Bann last weekend. The event saw World Champion barefoot waterskiers, local and National wakeboarders, waterskiers, and jetskiers excite the crowds. Competitive rowing, the Services Challenge, a Viking Invasion and a huge number of visitors enjoyed the June sunshine all day. Late into the evening thousands of people milled around watching the free concerts and huge firework laser show over the Lower Bann. The overwhelming success of the Waterways Ireland Riverfest has confirmed the Lower Bann as a wonderful asset to the town and will hopefully form the cornerstone of future events in Christie Park.

The Waterways Ireland Riverfest showcased the range of activities which can be enjoyed on the Lower Bann. All waterway users are reminded that the Lower Bann is zoned for different activities. Traffic travelling the length of navigation is welcome but specific activities should be undertaken in the appropriate designated zone. For example, a "No Wash Zone" is suitable for activities which do not create a wash or wake such as angling, rowing, canoeing etc. A Wash is the flow of water behind every craft powered by an engine, which causes a disturbance in the water.
