Launch Edenderry Angling Guide

Waterways Ireland and the Central Fisheries Board Launch Edenderry Canal Angling Guide

The 'Definitive Canal Angling Guide to Edenderry', developed by Waterways Ireland with assistance from the Central Fisheries Board, was launched yesterday, 15th February at 8.00pm in Foy's, Edenderry, Co Offaly.

The Edenderry Canal Angling Guide is the first in a series of Angling Guides produced and distributed by Waterways Ireland with the assistance of the Central Fisheries Board, to promote the excellent angling opportunities along the Canals in Ireland. The Guides include maps, illustrations, descriptions and comprehensive directions to angling locations and match stretches along with details on parking, pegs, towpaths and other information required by coarse anglers. This is the first time that this information has been compiled in a handy reference style booklet. The guide will be distributed free of charge to all angling centres in Ireland and the UK.

The series of 'Definitive Canal Angling Guides...' also includes guides on Leixlip, Enfield and Facilities for Disabled Anglers on the Grand Canal and Barrow Navigation.

Speaking at the Launch, Martin Dennany, Director of Marketing and Communications with Waterways Ireland said, 'Waterways Ireland is responsible for managing, maintaining, developing and restoring the inland navigable waterways principally for recreational purposes. In 2004, the Waterways Ireland research showed that Angling accounted for 20% of all activity on the waterways and in recognition of the importance of Angling and with a view to developing the resource further, Waterways Ireland with the assistance of the Central Fisheries Board have developed a series of Angling Guides, the first of which is being launched here today. The development of Angling brings huge economic benefit to an area such as Edenderry and it is hoped that the launch of the Edenderry Canal Angling Guide will further promote the Angling potential of the Grand Canal in this area'.

Dr Joe Caffrey, Senior Research Officer, Central Fisheries Board also added; 'We are delighted to be involved in this innovative project; Ireland's canals offer the perfect angling location and this series of guides will provide the explicit level of detail needed to bring the angler from, for example, a barstool in a Liverpool pub to a specific section of the Grand Canal West of Edenderry'
