Munro Challenge 2005

Waterways Ireland Staff in World Record Success!

Staff from the Waterways Ireland Offices in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh and Scarriff, Co Clare, were among a group of record breakers who climbed the three highest peaks in the Republic of Ireland as part of the Munro Challenge in support of WaterAid. On Saturday 11 June, 3 teams from Waterways Ireland joined 586 other teams (total of 3109 participants) in climbing 303 mountains over 3000ft. in Scotland, England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland in one day and in doing so, creating a world record. The Waterways Ireland teams climbed the three peaks of Carrauntoohil, Beenkeragh and Caher which form part of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks in Co Kerry. Excellent weather conditions prevailed and the climbers reached the respective summits in approximately two and a half to three hours.

In total over £300,000/ €444,000 was raised for WaterAid which will be used to fund safe water, sanitation and hygiene education programmes in Africa and Asia.
