New Moorings - Kilglass

NEW MOORINGS AT KILGLASS, CO ROSCOMMON

Waterways Ireland is delighted to announce that work has commenced on a scheme to provide new moorings and upgrade the amenity area at Kilglass, on the Shannon Navigation. The moorings are located on Kilglass Lake approximately 4km north of the Scramoge junction on the Rooskey Road in Co Roscommon. Waterways Ireland has recently taken over responsibility for the management and maintenance of the Kilglass Moorings from Roscommon County Council.

The existing fixed wooden jetties will be replaced by new floating jetties which will provide mooring for 8 to 10 craft. In addition to the new moorings, Waterways Ireland will be installing a floating breakwater to provide added protection to moored boats from the prevailing winds across Kilglass Lake. The amenity area will be enhanced with the addition of picnic tables and environmentally sensitive lighting along with an extended car-park which will include spaces for wheelchair users.

The total cost of the project is estimated at €300,000. The project is due to be completed in early 2007 ahead of the 2007 boating season.

Waterways Ireland has a programme of ongoing investment in upgrading and developing facilities on the Shannon Navigation. The Shannon Navigation, which includes the River Shannon and its lakes, is navigable over a distance of 215 km from Lough Allen, Co Leitrim to the sea at Limerick.

Waterways Ireland also recently announced plans to extend the Shannon Navigation north from Lough Allen to Annagh Upper, near Dowra. Further information on this project is available at www.waterwaysireland.org.

Waterways Ireland is the North/South Implementation Body responsible for managing, maintaining, developing and restoring the inland navigable waterways throughout the island.
