Rooskey Weir Boom

Waterways Ireland Carries out Upgrading Work on Shannon Navigation at Roosky

Waterways Ireland, as part of a planned programme of maintenance is installing a floating Weir Boom across the weir in Roosky on the River Shannon.

Work has already begun with the assembly of the boom on Roosky Dry Dock. On Friday the 21 November pontoons were floated down to the weir to facilitate the drilling for the piles which will hold the Weir Boom in place. The 70m Weir Boom floated down the river on Monday 24th November and will take one week to install. Works will be completed by the 28 November 2008. The cost of the works is approximately €100,000 with the majority of the works being carried out by Waterways Ireland staff.

The Weir Boom is a preventative measure by Waterways Ireland to protect boaters and their craft from being drawn over the weir and will prevent the sluices from getting blocked with large floating objects such as tree branches. Space has been left to allow for the passage of canoeists. There will be no environmental impacts on fish or other wildlife from the installation or operation of the Weir Boom.
