09/15 New Waterway Patroller F

New Waterway Patroller Facility opens on the Shannon-Erne Waterway

Waterways Ireland are delighted to announce the completion of a new Waterway Patroller Facility at Lock 16 Killarcan on the Shannon-Erne Waterway near Leitrim Village.

The investment of €220,000 involved the building of a permanent structure to house a Waterway Patroller with clear unobstructed views of the navigation whilst also providing welfare and storage facilities.

The building is a timely replacement for the temporary structure which has been used for the 15 years since the Shannon-Erne Waterway was re-opened in 1994. It also replaces the original Toll Collector's House which was built at Lock 16 during the construction of the Ballinamore & Ballyconnell Canal.

Improvements have been implemented to the overall site with additional car parking spaces and improved public lighting provided in addition to the environmental landscaping of the adjacent area. The standard of the access pathways to and from the landing jetties at the Lock have been greatly enhanced.

Lock 16 Killarcan is the western "gateway" to the Shannon-Erne Waterway and thus the new building play's a significant role in continuing to provide a high standard of customer service provision.

For waterway users the waterway patroller will continue to sell lock cards and provide customers with information on how to operate the semi-automated locks using the smart card system. An information rack in the building also holds free Waterways Ireland publications. Summer operating hours are now in place with the locks operating from 9am-8pm.
